Credit card scammers reported at Pflugerville area gas stations
Recently, there has been a significant increase in reported “skimming” cases at Pflugerville area gas stations.
These cases involve the illegal use of a portable card skimming devise to obtain credit and debit card information from unsuspecting motorists using the gas pumps. Suspects in the most recent cases are accessing fuel pumps by breaking the seal and entering the opposite side of the pump to install the card skimmer, meaning the affected gas pump appears to be untampered with and safe to use.
Stay vigilant when using your credit or debit card at a fuel pump. Before using your card, inspect both sides of the fuel pump for signs of tampering. If it appears that pump has been tampered with, using that pump is highly discouraged and the public is encouraged to report the issue to the gas station attendant. We also recommend using the “credit” option, when paying with a credit or debit card, because it typically does not require the owner to use a passcode and normally offers greater consumer protection.
If you encounter a tampered pump, or suspect that you have been a victim of a skimmer scam, please contact the police department.
